Mabel Guzmán

Mabél Guzmán is a Cuban immigrant who came to the United States as a child and raised in Chicago,  where she has worked in the real estate industry for nearly 30 years.  

She most recently worked as the Director of Real Estate Development for United Power for Action and  Justice on the Reclaiming Chicago Initiative. There she worked with the community developers on the  construction and sales of new homes for working families.  

She was the 2023 President for NAHREP DuPage County Chapter and served as the chapter’s  Government Affairs Director in 2020. She was the 2010 President for the Chicago Association of Realtors  and the 2001 President of Women’s Council of Realtors. 

Mabél as a broker at Coldwell Banker in Chicago, specialized in residential real estate, working with  investors and rehabbers who are focused in under-served communities and with first time home buyers  and sellers; while maintaining a strong referral business with past clients. 

Economic development, housing advocacy, and public policy are Mabel’s passions. In November 2021  she represented Illinois Realtors and testified before the Housing Committee regarding American Rescue  Plan funding and using these funds to spur housing development and redevelopment of abandoned  properties. At the Federal level, Mabel testified before the House Financial Services Committee in 2019  about the reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program, and in 2014 she also testified before  the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Urban Affairs and Banking on "Inequality and Opportunity in the  Housing Market."  

Her active involvement in actions that create policies that help the community are extensive. As an  advocate for Fair Tax Policies, she worked with the city of Chicago in helping over 30,000 homeowners in  Chicago file tax appeals and educate them on the process. Was one of the driving forces in creating the  Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) in the city of Chicago and regarded as the model for the  nation. Help to create the RFP that hired over 40 REALTORS to help acquire foreclosed properties in 25  targeted areas which created over 2,700 units of housing for purchase and rental combined. Currently  partnering with United Action to build housing in areas with blight that serve the overall community and  help build generational wealth in Black, Brown and Latino communities; the city has released 250 lots on  the westside of the city for this endeavor and advocacy continues for the release on the city’s southside. 

She has served as National Chair of NAR’s Consumer Communications Committee that assists on  consumer ads and messaging. Served as NAR’s National Chair of the Insurance Committee in 2021  where they analyzed PPP loans, Business Interruption insurance and worked with FEMA on flood rating  2.0. In 2020 she served as Vice President of Association Affairs of the National Association of  REALTORS®, where she collaborated with six Committee Liaisons, and had purview of 53 committees,  councils, forums, advisory groups and boards. At that time, she had the opportunity to work on the  “That’s Who We R” campaign and on the well received, Fair Housing campaign that correctly placed  accountability on people. In 2014 served as National Chair of NAR’s Conventional Finance and Policy  Committee. 

At the state level, Mabél served on the Illinois REALTORS® Board of Directors from 2009 to 2011. In  2014, 2015, and 2018 she received the Illinois REALTORS® President’s Medallion for Outstanding Service.  In 2020 received the Distinguished Service Award from Illinois Realtors; the last Distinguished Service  Award was given by Illinois Realtors in 2013.

Mabél is also a member of the Chicago Association of REALTORS® and served as its first Latina Treasurer  in 2009 and President in 2011. In 2012, the Chicago Association of REALTORS® named Mabél their  REALTOR® of the Year. In 2016, she received the Community Service Award and in 2021 She received the  Realtor Achievement Award for her work in the industry. 

Mabel was served as the 2002 President of Women’s Council of REALTORS Chicago Network and named  She was named 2009 Member of the Year by the Women’s Council of REALTORS® (WCR) of Chicago.  Recently served in the Executive Committee for Women’s Council of Realtors for Illinois. 

Mabél cares deeply about community service and has frequently partnered with Habitat for Humanity,  One Hope United, and the First United Methodist Homeless Ministry called Hope’s Table. She is a  longtime member of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP) and was  recognized in 2012 with a Community Service Award. In 2008 awarded as Colonel in the Alabama Militia  for her work volunteer work on Hurricane Katrina recovery in Mobile, Alabama.
